The couple began dating in 2008 and married two years ago, she said. “He said it was going to be a stormy night, and he wouldn’t get much sleep,’’ she said from her Florida home. But he was confident the ship and its crew could handle the conditions. When she spoke with him by phone Wednesday, he told her the storm was worsening and he was expecting to work through the night. His wife, Katie, who is pregnant with twins, said she has been waiting for his return so they could find out the babies’ gender together. Winthrop native Keith Griffin, 33, was serving as the crew’s first engineer. The disaster, apparently preceded by a mechanical failure, left families and friends from Maine to Florida grief-stricken, clinging to a measure of hope against growing despair.
